Just suppose... That in making a character you'd have the choice between starting penniless and 2nd level, or rich with 0 XP. What cash amount do you think would make that a balanced proposition? All hypothetical, of course.
Add up what it would cost to completely outfit a fighter with good armour, melee and missile weapon, and gear (tent torch and biscuits dagnabit!) 150-200 gp?
